Arnett Families

Summary of Some Barbados Records
of
Arnett Families

[40 pages]

A cousin, Larry Arnett, sent me a copy of a 1681 Barbados map which showed an Arnett plantation on the southern shore of Barbados in Christ Church Parish, and from Joan Sanders' 1984 six volumes of abstracted Barbados records (wills, baptisms and marriages) I learned that four generations of Arnett families had spent nearly 100 years on the island. An article, "Researching in Barbados" by Brainerd Beck in the Connecticut Nutmegger detailed his visit to the Archives in 1973 and gave an excellent account of the records available. In October 1997, while on vacation in Barbados with my family, I had the good fortune to visit the Archives at Black Rock, St. Michael Parish (housed in the former 1907 Lazaretto leprosarium [307]) and the Barbados Museum in Bridgetown (housed in the former Army Barracks.) I spent three days primarily looking at the "recopied deeds" and a few other indexes in the Archives and at maps and past issues of the its Journal while at the Museum. No one has yet systematically abstracted the Barbados deed books in the manner of Sanders, and I was limited to those deeds listed in the name of the grantor or grantee. If funds are found to permit the Archives to pay for a compilation of deed abstracts, more Arnett references will someday be found. But there is much information that even then will be unavailable--as suggested by Beck:

"The earliest deeds record book dates from 1647, but only about half of the series to 1718 is still extant; and from 1718-1781 the series is still incomplete. Moreover, many of the volumes cannot be used because of their bad state. Comprehensive indexes to grantors date from 1801; to grantees, only from 1879. Some of the earlier record books have individual indexes to grantors, but many have none.

"A number of deeds between 1636 and 1840 were entered into re-copied records books ( a series of 47 volumes compared with a possible 294 volumes of the original series in the same period). There is a comprehensive index to grantors and grantees for the re-copied volumes. Because of the limitations and difficulties of using the original series, searches before 1800 are usually only possible in the re-copied series."

In the Documents Section below my comments are in [brackets]. Each entry is given a unique bracketed number e.g. [1] followed by a bracketed source number. e.g. [123] or [bwsI-331]. In this first draft summary, these are in more or less chronological order. As addition information comes to light, they will be inserted with modifiers, e.g. [3a], [3b] eg. Where the source number has no other modifier, it is usually the page number from my notebook in which I copied some of the "recopied"[in mid 1800's] deeds from the Barbados Archives.

C.B. Arnett visited Barbados in January 1995 and also copied some records from the Archives. A partial listing of his notes follows my compilation, and I've incorporated in my summary several of the documents he found some of which I had overlooked. These are noted by #cba.

Individual identification numbers:

[1] = attempt to place after some of the persons named a unique identifying number
[1?] or [1]?[6] = suggested or ambiguous identity.

Capt. John Arnett [1], had at least two sons: John [2] , David [3] and a daughter Joan [19]

David [3] had two sons who survived to adulthood: John [5] and David [7]. Samuel [9] died in infancy. Sarah [11] was his daughter. There was also mention of a child [13] due to be born after David's will was made up.

There's no record of John [2] after his mention at age 14 in John's [1] will of 1659. He may have died young, sent to England for school or sent to Surinam to manage the family property there. And whatever the case he may have returned to be the same person as John [4] who in relationship with Hannah Gay had four children: Mary [6], John [8], William [10] and David [12]. However, David [12] was born in 1699 to John and Hannah Gay, and John [2] would have been 54. Although this is possible, I've chosen to think that John [4] was likely a son of John [2] or of some other Arnett family.

There's no mention of marriages of either David [7], b. 1677 or David [12] b. 1699. As noted below, in 1720 a David Arnett sold 10 acres of land to John Arnett, and in 1724 a David Arnett sold 12 acres of land to John Linscomb. It's not clear from the records which David is meant, though the 1720 transaction probably involved 53 yo David [7] while the 1724 may have been that of 25 yo David [12]. It's not yet clear which of these David Arnetts was the one whose CB Arnett's reference indicates sold land in St. Michael Parish and moved to South Carolina in the early 1700's.

Additional notes which CB Arnett has also collected in Barbados will, hopefully, shed more light on these relationships.

I've composed a "tentative" pedigree chart for the Arnetts which appear in the citations below, and this will be made available to any who are interested (jwarnett@aye.net). In the meantime a tentative register report is included below.

[The will would seem to indicate that John was older than the twins David and Sarah. Since they were born in 1677, and his father David [3] was not 21 until 1668, John [5] could have been born anytime between 1668 -- not yet 21 yo in 1682-- and 1676. [Since the maps generally indicated only the larger landowners, it's still possible that John Arnett [5] could have retained some residual holdings in Christ Church. ]

[David [7] had sold property in 1720, and it's possible that this was David [12] who would have been 25 yo and may have previously bought land the deed of which wasn't in the "recopied" group. [It's interesting that there are marriage records for both John [8] and John [5] Arnetts but that there were no known children born to them. On the other hand, there are no marriage records for either David [7] or David [12] Arnett.]

1728 John Arnett, surgeon, sold a tract of land in Charles Town to Richard Edgel. The record mentions that John was intending to marry Anna Gooll. John Arnett had acquired the tract of land in 1723. 24 Mar 1733
David Arnett [7?]?[12?]purchased 400 acres in Christ Church Parish of South Carolina from Benjamin and Sarah Law. There is no mention of David's wife or children in any of these deeds.

[C.B. Arnett has a record of a David Arnett's selling some property in St. Michael Parish or Barbados and moving to South Carolina in the early 1700's. These records were found in the Fairfield Co, S.C. library. More details to be added later. Should this turn out to be correct, David Arnett [7] would have been 56 yo in 1733. The other David Arnett [12] b. 1699, would have been 34 yo.]
[In a December 1998 phone conversation, C.B. expressed a worry that the record he'd seen may have referred to some beach property in St. Michael Parish, S.C. However, there was no St. Michael Parish, S.C. until 1751. In 1740 a David Arnett sold 400 acres of seacoast land in Christ Church Parish of South Carolina to Thomas Bolton for 585 pounds sterling.]

[The 1938 WPA Historical Survey Records show the following named Parishes of South Carolina for 1770 with date of formation in parenthesis: Christ Church (1706), St. Philip's (1706), St. Andrew's (1706), St. Paul's (1706), St. Thomas & St. Dennis (1706), St. John's Berkeley (1706), St. James Goose Creek (1706), St. James Santee (1706), St. Bartholomew's (1706), St. Helena's (1712), St. George (1717), St. John's Colleton (1730), Prince William (1745), St. Peter's (1747), St. Michael's (1751), St. Stephen's (1754), Prince Frederick (1754), St. Mark's (1757), St. Luke's (1767), All Saints (1767), St. Matthew's (1768) and St. David's (1768)]

It may also turn out that he left Barbados after selling his property in 1724 and returned to Scotland for the next ten years before returning to S.C., or he may have continued to reside in St. Michael after selling his land in 1724 until his move to S.C. if that's where he went. Notes on Barbados Arnett Families
Charles B. Arnett

Visit to Barbados

"My wife and I visited the island for five days in January 1995 and found it to be a very rewarding experience. The English are noted for their meticulous record-keeping, and Barbados was no exception."

"In the deed transfers from grantors to grantees and vice-versa, I have only included the main thrusts of the documents. The Spencerian writing was easy to read but very long and there were no means of obtaining copies."

"These are some of the deeds:"
[Note: Before each entry of the deeds, wills and baptisms below, I've entered in [brackets] the number of the entry in my own compilation for comparison. And at the end of C.B. Arnett's entries, I've added additional comments if there were discrepancies in the two entries.]

The following note was attached by C.B. Arnett:

"Life on Barbados
It is interesting to conjecture on the lives of our ancestors who lived almost a century on this island before emigrating to South Carolina. Below is given some facts and observations about Barbados:
1 -- July 5, 1628 - 64 settlers headed by Chas. Wolverstone arrived.
2 -- First governor of Barbados, Wolverstone had a been sent by a syndicate of London merchants headed by Sir Marmaduke Rawdon to manage 10,000 A. land granted by Jas. hay the Earl of Carlisle in settlement of his debts.
3 -- Each settler given 100 A. land"

Pedigree Chart:

C.B. Arnett constructed a pedigree chart of the Arnett families. Several connections are at variance with one which I constructed, but the essence of his is listed below:

John Arnett [1] (c.1610-1659) m. Marianne bef 1646; remar. Mary Mandevelle 8-20-1654
children: John, Jr [2] (13 Feb 1646 - 1704); David [3] (30 Dec 1647 - 12 Jan 1682)

John Arnett, Jr. [2] (1646-1704) m. ?
children: David [7] (1677), Ann (1682), Peter (1688), Mary [14](1688-1723), John III (1694-1777), William [10](1692)

David Arnett [3] (1647-1682) m. Jane
children: David Jr. [7] (1674 - d. in S.C.), Sarah [11] (1677), Samuel [9] (Feb 1679-Sep 1679)

David Arnett [7] (1674) m. ?
children: John [8] (1693 - d. S.C.)

John [8] (1693) m. ?
children: Samuel, Sr. (c.1730-1794/1800)

Samuel Arnett, Sr. (c.1730) m. ?
children: Samuel Arnett, Jr. (1755, S.C. - 1835, Henry Co, TN)

[I had the advantage of some more information, e.g. the Peter Baxter family, and also some notes which permitted understanding some of the other relationships. For ease of reference I've indicated the similar individual numbers as noted for individuals in my register report which preceded the Barbados Summary sheet.

For analysis I've used those numbers for the individuals below:]

[1] John Arnett.......same though est of birth dates vary

[2] John Arnett.......same though birth date varies by year and I'm not sure this is the same John who was the father of John [8], Mary [6], William [10] and David [12]. John [2] was born in 1645 and yet his possible children were not born until the 1690's suggesting John [2] may have been the grandfather of these children. Ann and Peter noted by C.B. as the children of John [2] were actually the children of Peter Baxter and Elizabeth Arnett as was "John III" b.1693. Elizabeth Arnett and her sister Ann were the daughters of Patrick Arnott who m. Ann Wensford in 1661.

[3] David Arnett......same; I have him with an additional son, John [5] bc.1675 based on the 1682 will of David Arnett [3]

[7] David Arnett......the baptisms state he was the son of David and Jane Arnett--rather than John-- as was his sister, Sarah, who was apparently his twin and they were born in 1677. There was a David Arnett [12] b. 1699 to John and Hannah Gay, and this is the David who was apparently the brother or step brother of Mary [6], John [8] and William [10]. Nevertheless, this David [7] may have been the one to immigrate to S.C.

[8] John Arnett........this individual is believed to have m. Jane Perloe in 1730 and to have died before her without leaving any children. However, it's certainly possible that the John who m. Jane Perloe was a different person from John Arnett [8] the brother of William and David. The John III listed above was actually John Baxter, b.1693. We don't have any record of the marriages or children of either David Arnett [7] or [12].

They then went to Jamaica and took that for the King. . ." There have probably been several biographies published on the life of Admiral Robert Venables, and his name figures prominently in the annals of times of Charles and Cromwell.
