Camps, Mission Trips and Other Outings

1907 - Bernard Spilman, Sunday School Secretary for the Baptist Convention of North Carolina,  was instrumental in the formation of "The Southern Baptist Assembly" which on March 8, 1907 purchased 1,100 acres of land in the mountains of North Carolina near Terrell.

1909 - "The Southern Baptist Assembly" held the first summer program at Ridgecrest (the name changed from Terrell to Ridgecrest in 1912).  600 attended.

1926 - The Baptist Education Board of North Carolina operated Camp Star Note, the girls' portion of Camp Swannanoa for two years.  This was the forerunner of Camp Crestridge for Girls.

1929 - Camp Ridgecrest for Boys was founded in 1929.  Logan Flecke attended for six summers, 2013 - 2018.

1932 - Oscar Layton Moore (1884-1967), a Chicago capitalist, developed land in Shelby County which he called "Cedarmore" and sold it to the Long Run Baptist Association.  CHBC began using Cedarmore in the 1950's

1935 - Silver Creek Baptist Center (somewhere in SE Ky)[Ben LaMaster attended as a youth and recalls it being very strict.]

1952 - Glorieta Baptist Assembly in New Mexico began operations

1955 - summer VBS at the Portland-Bridge Mission
1955 - The Sunday School Board of the SBC opened Camp Crestridge in the summer of 1955. Lifeway took over the management of Crestridge about 2018.  This camp was not affiliated with CHBC but is included here because many members of CHBC and their relatives attended Camp Crestridge. Some of these include:  Anne-Britton and Carolyn Arnett (started going to Crestridge in 1960),  Peggy Schmidt, Sally and Susie Sandidge (also attended in the 1960's with their horses), Margaret Graves, Liz McNown (Carolyn's and Peggy's sister), Erin McGee Ferrell, Michelle OJo, Cara Pollard, Michelle Seiffertt, Amy and Sarah McNeely, Betsy Routh Green & Lelia Routh Cothen (John Arnett's cousins), Morgan Flecke, et al.

1960 - Glorieta for Recreation Week

1961 - Intermediates, Junior, and Primary Camps at the Tate's Farm in eastern Jefferson County (3 miles north of Middletown)- tents were erected. This was the beginning of the Crescent Hill Camping experience, initiated by Recreation Director, Bob Myers.

1962 - March Youth Retreat at Camp Crescendo.
1962 - Youth Retreat during July or August at the newly developed "Cedarmore."
1962 - Primary Day Camp 7/30 - 8/3 at the Tate Farm in Middletown (counselors: Fred Williams, Jeane Myers, David Graves, Sarah Callaway.

1963 - Echo Valley Ranch leased for three camp sessions - Intermediates 6/21-24/1963

1964 - Youth went to Ridgecrest. "Roger Williams and Mary" play performed. Tour of Smokies and Pine Mtn "Book of Job" on way back

1964 - Arnold and Linda Epley (Music ministers) offered Music Education for grades 1-6 five mornings each Aug for seven years (1964-1971)

1975 - "In The Oaks" (Youth I and II).  This site for the summer Youth camp was suggested by Bill Treadwell, Minister of Education (Aug 1974 - Jan 1979). It was a historic estate in Black Mountain, NC.  The main house was built in 1921-23 as a four-level U-shaped Tudor country manor house with an oblique wing. (Wikipedia)  Bill Treadwell accompanied the Youth to "In the Oaks" and was often accompanied by Grady Nutt, and the current Youth minister or coordinator
