2............Johann Wilhelm Schmidt b. 28 Oct 1811, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, [2] m. 1838, in Chambersburg, PA, Anna M. Schwinn, b. 23 Feb 1819, Bada-Kechum, Germany, [3] d. 25 May 1905. Johann died 14 Mar 1874, Blackford Co, IN. immigrated to America in the early 1830's settling near Chambersburg or Hagersburg as a weaver. In 1841-42 the family moved to IN settling first in Delaware Co where they rented farm land and then in 1860 moved to Blackford Co where Wilhelm purchased 240 acres of land in Washington Twp from Brownlee, known as the Roderick Craig farm after the Craig who had been granted the original land under the admin of Martin Van Buren in 1838. Wilhelm was a successful farmer. The family attended the Lutheran Church.

(2) 27 Mar 1855, in Arcadia, Hamilton Co, IN, Anna Barbara Trietsch, b. 29 Oct 1829, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, d. 12 Mar 1878, Jackson Twp, Blackford Co, IN. Johan Peter Schmidt died 27 Oct 1882, Jackson Twp, Blackford Co, IN.

Johan Peter Schmidt was also from Darmstadt, Germany and like Wilhelm came to Pennsylvania in the early 1800's and settled in Chambersburg, PA where he also took up the trade of a tailor. Like Wilhem, he moved to Delaware Co, IN. A few years after William had settled in Blackford Co, Peter moved there also [by Dec 1865 ac to W.L. 4.............Smith m. wife. This Schmidt son or his son W.L. changed their name to Smith.

On 15 Dec 1865, this W.L. Smith, who was living in Chambersburg, PA , wrote a letter to his cousin, William Schmidt, on the news that William had gotten married to Ascenath Storms, his uncle Peter had moved to Blackford Co, and that his uncle Addam had died. He also mentions that cousin Mary Bowers husband Jacob had died a few weeks ago. He notes that there are too many relatives living in the Chambersburg area to keep up with all of them.

William received a congratulatory letter about his Oct 1865 marriage from his cousin, W. L. Smith of Chambersburg who wrote him in Dec 15, 1865. Much more information about William and Ascenath is available and will eventually be uploaded here.

Henry died 17 Jul 1924, Blackford Co, IN, [13] buried: Odd Fellows Cemetery, Hartford City, IN. Henry was involved in an automobile accident near Mt. Zion, IN on 30 June 1924 which led to his death some two and a half weeks later. Alice: Alice and Henry had no children. In 1929, Alice with Etta and Everett contested a proposed distribution of 22 acres of land near Roll, and the dispute was eventually settled in 1930. (original complaint No. 8992 in Civil Order Book 42, page 425, March 22, 1929).

William and Peter were born in PA, and the rest of the family was born in IN having moved there when Peter was an infant. Like his older brother, William, Peter was also drafted into the Union Army and served about two years duty during the Civil War.

11...........Adam Schmidt b. 11 Jul 1854, [20] m. in Wells Co, IN, Nancy E. Griffith, b. 2 Apr 1856, Wells Co, IN, [21] (daughter of Samuel Griffith and Charlotte Wiley). purchased additional lands when he reached age of majority and became a successful farmer like his father. Adam and his wife Nancy were original members of the Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith when it was first organized at Dundee, IN (Roll) Dec 6, 1873. A hundred years later in 1974 a new brick structure was built on land acquired from Adam's daughter, Mabel Schmidt Alexander. The names of these children of Adam and Nancy Schmidt are taken from the History of Blackford and Grant Counties, 1920. [22]

12...........Philip Schmidt b. 18 Feb 1856, Delaware Co, IN, [23] m. Martha Jane Shrader, b. 8 May 1858, Blackford Co, IN, (daughter of John R. Shrader and Mary Ann Cochran). He was six yo when family moved to Blackford Co, IN. He inherited farmland which became known as the Forest Grove Farm.

13...........Mary Bowers m. Jacob Heid, d. Nov 1865. W.L. Smith mention that cousin Mary Bowers husband Jacob Heid died. She was likely the daughter of one of Johan George Schmidt's daughters who had married someone named Bowers.

15...........Charles E. Schmidt b. 3 Jul 1873, Blackford Co, IN, m. 25 May 1894, in Blackford Co, IN, [27] Cora Essie Knox, b. 30 Aug 1877, (daughter of John Wesley Knox and Lydia Phillips) d. 15 Jun 1966, Blackford Co, IN. [28] Charles died 22 Sep 1955. [29]
Cora: Cora is said by Patty Dicky to have been a descendant of Sir John Knox of Scotland. She sustained a stroke with aphasia (loss of speech) 20 June 1957.

16...........Thomas H. Schmidt b. 31 Dec 1875, Blackford Co, IN, m. 10 Feb 1900, in Silas, IN, Ida Pearl Creager. Thomas died 17 Jun 1948. [31] Thomas worked in a factory in IN

17...........Luther Monroe Schmidt b. 6 Jan 1883, Blackford Co, IN, m. 24 Oct 1906, in Marion, Grant Co, IN, [32] Ethel Johnson, b. 29 Sep 1887, Blackford Co, IN, [33] (daughter of Charles Melville Johnson and Mary Margaret "Maggie" Weller) d. Jul 1983, Carmi, White Co, Illinois. Luther died 17 Mar 1948, Carmi, White Co, Illinois. [34] Luther attended one year of school beyond high school [perhaps at the Normal School in Muncie] and obtained some business training. He worked on the oil fields and moved to Sand Springs, OK, working for the Savoy Oil Co. They then moved to Sapulpa and when Gail entered OBU moved to Shawnee. When an oil boom hit Wewoka about 1928 Luther & Ethel opened a successful grocery there. Wishing to get closer to IN, Luther moved to Carmi in 1938 and opened a Western Auto Store which he continued to operate until his death in 1948.
Ethel:
Ethel (Johnson) Schmidt may have grown up nearer Marion where her father ran a store in his later years. When she was young, Ethel started attending a church about 5 miles from their home. She learned business acumen from her dad, and from her savings, bought their first grocery store in Sapulpa. She remained a staunch Baptist and faithful member of the FBC in Carmi. She dropped dead suddenly at her home at 95 yo.

18...........Hazel G. Schmidt b. 1890, m. Walter C. Ratliff.

19...........Mabel May Schmidt m. 1916, in Blackford Co, IN, Earl Milton Alexander, b. 1893, [35] (son of Commodore Alexander and Frances Runkle) d. 1937. Mable was well educated and taught school in the Blackford Co public schools in the fall, winter and spring and then taught at the Normal school in Muncie in the summers. She assisted her husband with the Hardware business and ran the company with her son after her husband died. In addition she maintained the farm operation.
Earl:
Earl, Sr purchased the Leiber-Campbell Hdwe store in about 1915 which moved to the east side of the square in 1922 and became the Hartford Hardware Co.

21...........Herbert L. Schmidt b. 11 Jan 1887, Blackford Co, IN, m. Bertha Littlebridge, b. 1889, Blackford Co, IN, (daughter of James Bluford Lillibridge and Eliza Ann Moore). Herbert was well educated in the public schools and the Marion Normal school, and taught school for many years beginning at age 18.
